Description

We wanted to make a South Africa Tour shirt that really popped, so we asked our design team to imagine if a South African fan got a bang on the head and woke up thinking they were a Pacific Islander. I think they’ve nailed it. This shirt might give Faf’s hair a run for its money.

What makes this special for me is that we avoided going for a shirt with the Big 5 safari animals, and we avoided copying Hawaiian of Fijian designs. We think this is full on South Africa but in a way you don’t normally see South Africa. Here’s what we’ve got:
• King Protea flower – the national flower of South Africa
• Bird of Paradise flower – native to South Africa
• Silhouette of Table Mountain
• Pondo Palm tree
• Surfer
• Turtle – there’s huge nesting grounds for loggerheads and leatherbacks in KwaZulu-Natal
• Blue Cranes – the national bird of South Africa
• Custom logo in colours representing South Africa and England

But what really makes the shirt p-p-p-pop? We think it’s got to be the penguin. It always twists my mind when I think of penguins living in the heat of South Africa.
Not one to give up easily, I tried again.  “imagine if a Springbok fan got hit on the head, and woke up thinking they were a Pacific Islander.  That’s the vibe we’re looking for”.  Fortunately the team thought this was a much more likely scenario and could get into that character to design a shirt.

And I think they’ve delivered a Worldie! What makes this special for me is that we avoided going for a shirt with the Big 5 safari animals, and we avoided copying Hawaiian of Fijian designs.  We think this is full on South Africa but in a way you don’t normally see South Africa.  Firstly we’ve got the King Protea – the national flower after which the Cricket team is named.  This looks amazing.  Then we added the Bird of Paradise Flower; native to South Africa and so distinctive.  After that we added the silhouette of Table Mountain which you can see in the sky blue area behind the surfer and in front of the Turtle.  Oh yes.  The Turtle.  That’s another bit – South Africa has huge nesting populations of Loggerheads and Leatherbacks in KwaZulu-Natal so we wanted to include that.  Next we’ve added some Blue Cranes – the national bird of South Africa.  They look stunning on the front and back of the shirt.  Then we’ve got the custom badge.  It’s a simple thing, but simple details matter so we’ve included the colours of South Africa and England into it.  But what really makes the shirt p-p-pop?  It’s got to be the penguin – it always twists my mind seeing penguins in South Africa!

So there you have it:  “Imagine if a Springbok fan got hit on the head and woke up thinking they were a Pacific Islander”.
